The skin of the penis covers the glans and head of the penis. IF you cut it off, the surgery will expose the penis. It was thought to help males keep the private area clean. If you want to circumcision your baby, talk to a professional who will do the process. It can be a pediatrician, family doctor, urologist, neonatologist, or even a pediatric surgeon. While most babies can be circumcised within 48 hours after birth, if your baby is premature, you need to wait. The doctor will clearly explain the risks and benefits associated with the surgery. It is your time to ask any questions or clear any doubt you have about the process. Once you are satisfied, you’ll sign an informed consent form giving your permission for the surgery.
Preparation for Circumcision For NewBorn
If the process occurs when your baby is newborn, they will be in their senses during the process. It is likely to happen in a hospital. They will be placed on their back, with Velcro bands or other restraints used to keep their arms and legs in a still position. The doctor will first clean the penis area with an antiseptic and then inject an anesthetic to the base of the penis to erase the pain. Your doctor will also advise you to swaddle them after the process by putting them up tightly in a blanket or having them suck on a pain reliever dipped in sugar water. Your baby also may be given a pain killer for reducing pain. Three different types of clamps and plastic rings are used for the process: the Gomco clamp, the Plastibell device, and the Mogen clamp. But the process is more or less similar for each one of them. The clamp and ring are attached to the penis, and the doctor clips off the extra foreskin. The ring will stay on and will fall off later on. Then, the doctor applies petroleum jelly to the area and wraps it in gauze. It is usually finished in about 10 minutes approx. If it is done in the hospital, your baby should be ready to go home in a few hours.
It’s OK to wash their penis as it heals. It would help if you changed their bandage with each diaper change, applying a dab of petroleum jelly first to stick to their nappies. Around two days after the process, the bandage is usually not put back again once it comes off the penis. Lubricant is often used to keep the penis from sticking to the diaper. If stool gets on their penis, gently wipe it away with warm, soapy water. To ward off infection, change their diaper often and fasten it loosely.
