You should always keep your Baby’s belly button clean until the umbilical cord falls off. This is a very crucial step in baby care. Once upon a time, doctors used to prescribe to clean the belly button with rubbing alcohol. They thought the cord would fall off quickly in that way. But later research shows that it falls off eventually when it dries naturally. However, they now recommend to clean it off several times a day.

So, before cleaning your baby’s belly button, there are some critical steps to follow. Take all the ingredients in your vicinity before starting the procedure. You need a big towel, some soft towels, cotton swabs, a bowl of lukewarm water and mild baby moisturizer. Always remember never to keep your baby unattended or beside any elevated surface. Don’t leave a newborn beside the pool or too hot things. Also, always wash your hands properly before touching the umbilical cord. There are still chances of infection if you don’t do so. Now, look for any abnormalities like redness, puss, or smell in the umbilical cord. If you notice something like that, immediately call your pediatrician. This kind of condition can cause mild fever.
